Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4 large large onions, ideally Vidalia or Walla Walla for sweetness Opt for sweeter varieties for better flavor.
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil Use any preferred cooking oil.
  • 1 tablespoon beef broth (or a vegetarian alternative) Substitute with vegetable broth for vegetarian option.
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar Adds brightness and enhances flavor.
  • Salt and pepper, to taste Season to preference.
  • Optional: fresh herbs such as thyme or parsley for garnish Great for adding freshness to the dish.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Begin by slicing the onions thinly, ensuring uniformity for even cooking.
  • Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat, then add the sliced onions. Stir to coat evenly.
  • Season the onions with salt and pepper. Allow them to cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for about 30 minutes until they begin to soften and caramelize.

Caramelization

  • Once the onions are golden, deglaze the pan with beef broth or a suitable alternative, scraping up any brown bits to incorporate into the mix.
  • Add the apple cider vinegar, stirring to combine, and continue to cook for an additional 10 minutes until the onions are deeply caramelized.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning as necessary. Garnish with fresh herbs before serving.

Notes

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week or frozen for up to three months. To reheat, warm gently in a skillet over low heat, adding a splash of water or broth if necessary.
